You will find something more in woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters.
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux
The word for world is forest.
Ursula Le Guin
I hear the call of the wild: I’ve been Mogwli, I’ve been Tarzan, I’ve been Buck. The forest is a refuge, a realm of beauty. A universe populated by creatures of formidable grace: the robin, the fox, the deer, the butterfly, the willow, the stream. Even the water becomes wild in the woods. Everything is alive.
The trees are the populace that invented the forest. Every forest is twofold: the one above, which we see, and the one below, the realm of roots. The one below is like a solid shadow – and we scamper along the boundary that divides light from shadow, the conscious from the unconscious. Plants breathe differently at night than they do during the day; who knows if they dream, and if they dream, is it in the light of the sun or the moon? The forest is mystery, it is danger. Knowing the language of the forest is my dream. Understanding the songs of its birds, cicadas, water, wind, wild gods. Telling their stories. The forest doesn’t need me. I need the forest.
Barbara Capponi’s Retablos, small sculptures inspired by the Mexican tradition, tell of woods, creatures and stories.
Claudia Chianese’s new jewels are inspired by the forest, which has always been the archetype of initiation, enchantment, and fury. Made of rose bronze and burnished rose bronze in lost wax, they are conceived as a second skin to wear. Light/dark, light/shadow just like the double aspect of the forest and of life.
